Recent 東方 Craze October 24, 2006

Posted by milkmandan in 東方 Project.

So yeah, as late as it seems, I’ve got a large 東方 craze.

I’ve always been addicted to scrolling shooters, but never found the heart to get my own arcade machine (which costs a bundle), or spend $10 on a single machine just to beat it once. That is not satisfying. 東方 however, is satisfying.

What is 東方?

– The Touhou Project (東方 Project, sometimes Toho or Touhou) is a series of curtain fire scrolling shooters made by Team Shanghai Alice. They are notable for being successful Doujin Soft because of their intricate bullet patterns, their greater focus on characters than most shooter games, and being a one-man project.

The Games:

* TH01 東方靈異伝 ~ Highly Responsive to Prayers
* TH02 東方封*録 ~ Story of Eastern Wonderland
* TH03 東方夢時空 ~ Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream
* TH04 東方幻想郷 ~ Lotus Land Story
* TH05 東方怪綺談 ~ Mystic Square
* TH06 東方紅*郷 ~ Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
* TH07 東方妖々夢 ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom
* TH07.5 東方萃夢想 ~ Immaterial and Missing Power
* TH08 東方永夜抄 ~ Imperishable Night
* TH09 東方花*塚 ~ Phantasmagoria of Flower View
* TH09.5 東方文花帖 ~ Shoot the Bullet
* 萌える弾幕STG もえ*ん Moedan
* Super Marisa Land
* MegaMari
* Touhou Soccer
* 東方烈華伝 ~ Rift In A Friendship Game
* OHBA* 東方幻想連鎖 ~ファンタズマゴリア~
* HiGaST

Anyways, these games are great to play when you wanna past time. 🙂 Now if only I could find a active torrent with the OST.

Of all the 東方 games,”th09.5 – Shoot the Bullet” has got to be the most creative scrolling shooter.

You don’t blow anything up, you don’t have massive bombs to use.

I guess this is more of a training game where it teaches you how to dodge.

Bullets in this game do not travel straight. Most of them do not 😉

The point of this game is to dodge, avoid getting killed, and to take pictures.

A successful picture, with you and the enemy included, will wipe out any bullets in the area and your snapshot will be saved to the side. Get a total of 3 or 5 pictures, and you beat the stage. Each time you make a successful picture, the bullet patterns get more crazy, making it harder to dodge.

“th09 – Phantasmagoria of Flower View” Probably my 2nd favorite, but not as challenging as Shoot the Bullet.

Think of Puzzle Fighter or Tetrinet or PuyoPuyo, but instead of putting blocks down you are blowing things up.

Getting your charge bar up is extremely important, as it will allow you to do spell attacks that really screw up the enemy.

yeeeaaahhh….I win~!

Oh well that’s about it.

Thanks Shamen~

A latecomer to the touhou scene eh.

Well, my fav was phantasmagoria of flower view, and I still play it.

As for Shoot the Bullet, the key is to find the pattern of the bullets. It should be possible to dodgy between them to get you close to the boss. I know in one of them you just keep going round and round in between the gaps of the bullets. But I agree it is a very hard game — I never actually finished it.

You neglect to mention that the music in touhou games are crazy and there is a big fan scene which make remixes for the games.

You missed the 6.10 GB Touhou Music pack!

I never did grasp the complete concept of Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Shoot the bullet was fun , thought need a game controller for maneuvering.

I think there was this 3d-ish touhou shooting game.

Yup, arcade shooters are getting better…
It’s always a panic attack whenever you meet a new boss though.

Where did you find the games? I can’t seem to find them for the life of me.

Wikipedia has some links to the Japanese creator’s homepage complete with demos. Don’t know about the full versions.

Does anyone know how to get a game controller to work or to play two player on the game? Whenever I try to play two player I find that I cannot move my character. (Either one) If you know how to correct this or configure a controller to play with the game then, send me an email at Charizardpal (at) yahoo (dot) com. (I think I have the demo.)

In the spirit of really late replies…

There are two online stores which stock the Touhou games and ship anywhere in the world (pretty much):

I’ve bought stuff from both. Paletweb looks less professional, but their service is comparable to Himeya’s and their selection of Touhou bric-a-brac appears to be better.
